Ustad Bismillah Khan

Ustad Bismillah Khan was born on 21 March 1916 and left this world on 21 August 2006. He was born in Bihar and was a great musician. He was the one to bring Shehnai to the concert stage and was awarded Bharat Ratan award. He belonged to a family of musicians including his father as well as the great-grandfather. They all were court musicians and his father played shehnai.

He and shehnai were considered as synonyms and he was the one to bring this instrument in the light. He was at a monopoly as he was sole player of this instrument who gained so much of recognition. He has an ideology to relate music with the good thoughts of peace all over. He referred to his shehnai as his begum and when he passed away his shehnai was buried along with him.

He got the opportunity to perform at Red Fort in 1947 and as well on 26 January 1950 when India became a Republican. His recordings were telecasted on Doordarshan and on the radio as well. His fine art was the talk of the town. He had been in the spotlight due to his work of art.

He won Bharat Ratan, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Best performer in All India Music Conference and three medals at the same honorable stage. He had many stars attached to his shoulder and above are just a few.  
He was never in favor to accept somebody as his student as he considered that he couldn't pass that much of knowledge to them and it would be a very little part of the knowledge for his students. He had a big family and died due to cardiac attack.

A talent that was one of his kind and an artist whose lose can never be overcome, India lost his shehnai with his demise. His recordings are the only source through which the present generation can listen to the magic he created on the stage. A man with that talent got fame, recognition, respect and is still remembered by many musicians whenever the shehnai is the topic.
